O.C. leads state in new jobs in May No one is saying we're out of a recession yet, but Orange County outdid every other area of the state when it came to creating new jobs in May, according to California employment data. Orange County netted 9,100 new jobs last month while San Diego ranked second, with 8,400 new positions.
Orange County employers have added jobs four months in a row, but still have a lot of lost ground to make up. Orange County hasn't seen annual job growth since April of 2007 when the county added 1,200 positions to payrolls, a 0.1% annual increase. Since then, 144,800 local jobs have disappeared. April 2007 was the month the mortgage meltdown began to pick up speed in Orange County, ground zero for the subprime lending industry. The county lost 13,500 mortgage-related positions alone that year including workers at such previously big companies as New Century Financial Corp. in Irvine, which filed bankruptcy in April 2007. Ameriquest in Orange, once the largest subprime lender in the country, closed in August of that year. Source: Orange County Register |
