Long-term jobless in Calif. tops 900,000

While California gained some jobs in May, the number of long-term unemployed hit 913,000, more than double the 430,000 a year ago, reports the Employment Development Department.

Now more than four out of 10 laid-off workers in California — 41.8% — have been unemployed 27 weeks are more.  At the national level, 46% are listed as long-term unemployed.

It is unclear how many of the long-term unemployed have been out of work much more than six months.  Anyone who has gone through their initial 26 weeks of unemployment is categorized by the government as long term.

However, as of June 14, EDD estimated 129,000 Californians had exhausted the maximum 99 weeks of unemployment benefits. The number who have run out of benefits has been growing by about 5,000 a week.

Typically people who just lost their job and have been out of work five weeks or less are the largest group of unemployed.

In May, they were the third-largest group.  In fact, the 411,000 people newly unemployed in May was actually down from May 2009, when 436,000 had just been laid off.
